March 1 – Although he underachieved in Tampa Bay, it didn’t take free agent wide receiver Reidel Anthony long to land with another team. The free agency period started on Friday, and Anthony signed a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins on the same day. Anthony, who was Tampa Bay’s 1997 first-round draft pick, will be reunited with his University of Florida and new Washington head coach, Steve Spurrier.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Reidel Anthony will play for Steve Spurrier, again. But this time around, Anthony, who played at the University of Florida, will play for Spurrier in Washington with the Redskins.

Anthony (5-11, 180) was Tampa Bay’s 1997 first-round selection in the NFL Draft, but he never lived up to expectations. In his five-year career with the Bucs, Anthony caught a total of 144 passes for 1,846 yards and 16 touchdowns.

During his tenure in Tampa Bay, Anthony was a part-time starter. But Anthony fell out of favor with Buccaneer coaches because of his inconsistency at the receiver position.

Anthony took a pay cut during the 2001 offseason in order to stay with the Buccaneers, but injuries and more inconsistencies were why he found himself playing on the scout team toward the end of last season.

According to ESPN, Anthony will sign a one-year contract for $525,000 and no signing bonus.
