On Sunday I went inside the RCA Dome and scouted Louisville wide receiver Harry Douglas for the Pro Football Writers’ Association. Here is the scouting report that I turned in on Douglas. It’s a great insider’s view of one of the talented wide receivers in this draft:

WR Harry Douglas, Louisville

First, Douglas’ left thumb and wrist was taped up during the 40-yard dash, during which he appeared to accelerated well after the 10-yard line. He didn’t run quite as fluidly as some of the other receivers, but he gathered speed quickly thanks to his tall, lean and athletic frame. He seemed to have good, but not great, burst coming out of his three-point stance.

Douglas caught every pass but one today, fumbling a pass during the 15-yard post drill. But even on that miss, Douglas attempted to catch the football the same way as he did all morning — away from his body. I thought he did a great job of using his hands, and not his body, to catch every pass. To me, it’s a sign that Douglas understands the fundamentals of the position.

During the gauntlet drill Douglas ran fluidly, used his hips well and stayed close to the 20-yard line. He caught every pass.

When the passes weren’t that great, Douglas did a fine job of adjusting. He used his lean frame on a 10-yard out as the quarterback nearly threw the ball over Douglas’ head. He did a great job of using his entire body to reach up, get the pass and stay inbounds. He also adjusted well to an underthrown pass on a streak route. And, he made a fingertip catch on the sideline on a two-move route when Colt Brennan led him a little too far.

Overall, I was impressed. He catches the football fundamentally well, has good speed and quickness and controls his body well when he has to make the more spectacular catches. If you’re looking for negatives, he may not accelerate as quickly off the line as other receivers and his cuts could be sharper.
