Woof69: Going into camp this year, will (left tackle) Luke Petitgout be back healthy and productive enough to play at a high level? If not, can Donald Penn follow up a very impressive rookie start by stepping things up a notch and be our quality left tackle for the future?
Matthew Postins: First of all, I think it’s pretty much a given that Petitgout will be ready to go once workouts begin next month. By the end of the regular season, Petitgout was already doing running drills at the practice fields, and GM Bruce Allen said there was little doubt that Petitgout would be ready. I thought Penn had a solid season, even though he was thrown into the deep end of the pool. The kid had a great work ethic and worked after practice repeatedly with offensive line coach Bill Muir. Bringing Muir back this season should help Penn’s development. Now, is Penn ever going to be an elite, or at the least, above average left tackle? I don’t think so. He just seems to my untrained eye to be a bit too slow for the position. So I think what you will see happen during training camp is Petitgout and Penn compete for the starting job, with Petitgout winning it about midway through the preseason. The coaching staff loved how Petitgout solidified the left side of the line last year, but Penn earned the chance to push Petitgout for the job after what he did in 2007.
