Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia seems close to returning to
the practice field from a strained calf, according to head coach Jon Gruden.
Gruden said on Monday that while Garcia still isn't ready to go, he is
making progress from the injury that has kept him out of training camp since
Saturday.
"He can watch and be a spectator at this point," Gruden said. "Hopefully
in the next 48 hours he'll be able to get back on the practice field in some
capacity."
The Bucs play Miami on Saturday. Given the Bucs will likely use Brian Griese, Luke McCown and Chris Simms in that game, it's unlikely Garcia would
see more than a series or two of work.
"You don't want to have a setback," Gruden said.
Gruden also put DT Jovan Haye in the "making progress" category. He's
missed nearly a week of camp with a leg injury and Ryan Sims has taken most
of his first-team reps.
WR Joey Galloway and FB B.J. Askew seem less likely to play Saturday. DE
Charles Bennett had difficulties with dehydration on Monday and missed part
of the workout.
WR Antonio Bryant returned to the field after a one-day absence with a
mild injury.
