Saying quarterback Jeff Garcia isn’t moving at full speed, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden told reporters that it would be “hard to imagine” that Garcia would play on Sunday in a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
That game is slated to be televised nationally.
“I’d like to see him start and finish a practice before we declare him ready to play,” Gruden said.
Garcia hasn’t practiced in more than a week since he strained his calf muscle. He’s been working out in a limited fashion the past few days.
Reporters also asked Gruden about running back Carnell Williams and his continuing rehab from a torn patellar tendon. Gruden said the trainers have Williams on a “yellow” light right now and there’s no timetable for his return.
“I don’t know, I’m not a doctor,” Gruden said. “I’m just telling you where we are right now. He’s made tremendous strides and I would think with Carnell anything is possible.”
Williams is currently on the active physically unable to perform list.
In a completely unrelated story, injured pro golfer Tiger Woods visited practice on Wednesday.
“He spoke to the team and got a chance to visit with a lot of the players,” Gruden said. “If you ask me, and this is just my opinion, he is global. He is the No. 1 superstar in all of sports, at least on my list. He hits all the shots, all the time. He’s got complete mental control. He’s unbelievable, and hopefully some of that rubs off on us.”
