Bucs cancel Friday ST practice

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take the afternoon off on Friday to engage in some off-field team activities. Bucsblitz.com took in one of Thursday’s workouts and files this report, including an exclusive play-by-play of 11-on-11 drills from that practice.

The Buccaneers have announced that the afternoon special teams practice scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7th has been cancelled. The team will instead continue its traditions of taking an afternoon off from camp for a team activity.

C Jeff Faine (groin), WR Antonio Bryant (knee), WR Michael Clayton (hamstring), DE Kyle Moore (shoulder) and RB Derrick Ward (foot) missed Thursday’s practice due to injuries. The only player who is not listed as day-to-day is Clayton, who is instead considered week-to-week with a deep hamstring injury.

11 on 11 starting at the 30-yard line – PLAY BY PLAY

QB Byron Leftwich opens the drill under center with consecutive handoffs to RB Earnest Graham and RB Clifton Smith

Leftwich throws play action pass to Campbell who caught the pass over S Tanard Jackson before stepping out of bounds.

Leftwich fakes the run before rolling out of the pocket and finding WR Patrick Carter downfield for a 25 yard gain.

WR Maurice Stovall runs reverse to the right side, but the defense steps up and stops play after short gain.

QB Luke McCown comes in and hands the ball off to Graham who is stuffed at the line of scrimmage

McCown fakes the run before hitting a slanting WR Brian Clark in mid-route for a 12 yard gain.

McCown tosses the ball to RB Carnell Williams who is stopped in the backfield for a loss by LB Barrett Ruud. Williams still is impressing critics with how smooth his cuts are.

McCown launches a deep ball downfield to a wide open WR Dexter Jackson for a 70 yard score. Jackson took advantage of blown coverage by the defense.

RB Kareem Huggins takes the handoff up the middle but is unable to gain any yards.

QB Josh Freeman throws a pretty play action pass to Campbell for a 26 yard gain. Campbell gets up limping and appears to injure his quad during play.

Huggins ends the scrimmage with a 7-yard gain on a toss.

7-on-7- PLAY BY PLAY

Leftwich opens 7-on-7 with a short 5-yard pass to Clark.

Leftwich pumps fake the deep pass before finding TE John Gilmore across the middle for a 10 yard gain.

Leftwich looks to go deep again but good defensive coverage forces to check down to FB Jameel Cook for a short gain.

Leftwich throws incomplete pass intended for Stovall who makes reception out of bounds.

McCown comes in and on his first play is unable to find any open receivers due to excellent coverage downfield by CB Torrie Cox, S Donte Nicholson, and CB Elbert Mack.

McCown completes 4-yard pass to Graham

McCown throws questionable pass downfield to Carter in double coverage.

McCown overthrows a wide open TE Jerramy Stevens.

Freeman overthrows on a pass attempt to WR Sammie Stroughter. There was excellent coverage by Ruud on the play.

Freeman finds Huggins for a short gain

Freeman misfires over the middle to TE Ryan Purvis. The ball was a little overthrown, but still could have been caught by Purvis.

QB Josh Johnson enters the mix and finds a wide open Stevens over the middle for a 12-yard gain.

11 on 11 starting at the 40 yard line – PLAY BY PLAY

QB Byron Leftwich hits Clark in the chest, but the ball bounces out of his hands and is nearly intercepted by CB Ronde Barber

Leftwich hits Gilmore for a 5-yard gain.

Leftwich launches a deep ball downfield to Stroughter, who makes a perfect over the shoulder catch for the 60-yard score.

Leftwich and Stroughter hook up again for a touchdown. This time Stroughter was streaking down the field without a defender within 10 yards.

Leftwich is sacked by LB Quincy Black who lined up at the left defensive end position

McCown hits Stovall for an 8-yard gain

McCown faces tough pressure from the defensive line and the play is blown dead before DE Gaines Adams and Black sack the QB.

McCown lines up in shotgun formation but is forced to run out of the pocket by DT Jimmy Wilkerson.

McCown is forced to scramble yet again thanks to pressure from the defensive line. This time though he gets rid of the ball after finding Purvis for a 17-yard gain.

Before McCown can take snap, OT Donald Penn is called for a false start and takes a lap. Offensive line coach Pete Mangurian has any players who are flagged run a lap around the field.

McCown runs a draw with RB Josh Vaughan carrying the ball for a short gain.

McCown overthrows Graham in the middle of the field.

Freeman under throws TE Jason Pociask over the middle. On the play, Williams lined up as a wide receiver.
