QB Josh Freeman: First-round reportedly signs deal by Tyler Frazier of BucsBlitz.com, July 31, 2009 at 3:50pm ET
Josh Freeman Profile
In order for Buccaneers rookie Josh Freeman to compete for the starting quarterback position, the 17th overall pick first had to sign a contract.
That is exactly what happened the night before all players were required to report for Training Camp. Although practices do not start until Saturday, the Bucs cleared a big obstacle.
Freeman reportedly signed a 5-year deal, which ESPN reported is worth $36 million, including $10.245 million in guarantees.
The question regarding whether Freeman is expected to start or even see the field in 2009 still is up in the air. Many believe some within the organization want Freeman to sit and learn for his first year. Although if Josh McCown or Byron Leftwich can’t grab hold of the spot, it is possible Freeman sees some playing time.
With the official signing of Freeman, the Bucs have now locked up all of their rookies to contracts, avoiding any possible holdouts entering Training Camp.
Freeman was drafted by the Buccaneers out of Kansas State where he became the school’s all time leader in passing yards (8,078), touchdowns (44), and completion percentage (59.0).
