Rookie Watch: Johnathan Hankins

Johnathan Hankins | New York Giants

Never shy to bolster their defensive line through the NFL draft, the New York Giants nabbed Ohio State's standout tackle Johnathan Hankins in the second round back in April. While New York's defensive tackle depth chart is crowded to say the least, Hankins could be a key contributor down the road for Big Blue.

Every year there seems to be a college player who's draft stock plummets in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft. One those players this time around, was Johnathan Hankins, the tenacious defensive tackle from Ohio State. Hankins enjoyed a tremendous season in 2012 for the Buckeyes. He was named First Team All-Big Ten and was a First Team All-American.

Nicknamed "Big Hank" because of 6-foot-3 330 pound frame, Hankins was originally projected to be a mid-to-late first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. When draft day came, Hankins dropped out of the 1st round and had to wait until the mid second round to hear his named called. Even though dropping out of the first round was tough for Hankins, the former Ohio State standout is determined to play with a chip on his shoulder.

Coming into college, Hankins weighed 350 pounds and was thought to be overweight by the Buckeyes' coaching staff. After his freshman year, Hankins trimmed to 330 pounds and saw his play improve tremendously. He became more than just a first or second down defensive tackle to just stop the run, but he became a three down defensive tackle. With his strength, size, and great athleticism, Hankins provides the Giants with depth at the tackle position, which was lackluster to say the least this past season.

Now with Hankins and free agent signings Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson in the fold, Big Blue has the potential to stymy opponents running games and allow their stud defensive ends to put pressure on the quarterback. Now the question for Hankins will be whether he will see playing time at a deep and talented tackle spot? We will just have to see how that competition plays out in training camp. Hankins has a great upside and like his fellow draftee Damontre Moore, can be evolve into a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
